On November 2, the Gilda’s Club Chicago Associate Board gathered the community for a memorable night at Chicago’s iO Theater for Gilda’s Night Out. This annual event honors Gilda Radner’s legacy, celebrating her courageous approach to facing cancer with humor, while also raising awareness of the healing power of laughter.
From the first giggle to the final belly laugh, the evening captured the spirit of resilience and joy. Two members of Gilda’s Club Chicago (GCC), Jimmy and Courtney, and a comedian from iO, Dani, took the stage to share personal stories about using humor as a way to uplift their spirits during their cancer journeys. These heartfelt anecdotes reminded everyone how laughter can lighten even the heaviest moments.
Adding to the night’s excitement, 2023 Chicago Reader’s Best Comedian in Chicago, Rogue Schmidt, brought the crowd to their feet, and NBC5 meteorologist, Kevin Jeanes, served as the event’s emcee, weaving his own humor throughout the program.
As the main program wrapped, the laughter continued into the Not Suitable For Prime Time Afterparty, where local drag performers Derry Queen and Yuiza Beach took the stage, filling the room with laughter, music, and dancing. Guests stayed well into the night, soaking up the contagious joy and camaraderie.
Gilda’s Night Out reminds us of the strength that laughter brings, and the night served as a powerful tribute to Gilda’s legacy and to everyone who faces cancer with courage, humor, and hope.
