Last week, we witnessed something truly remarkable—proof that a united community is stronger than cancer. This powerful message was made evident through a heartwarming collaboration between Taylor and Jevon Carter of Treadmill Mentality, GCC, Lurie Children’s Hospital, and Smithbucklin, all working together to support children undergoing treatment for an oncology or hematology diagnosis.

Back in June, we reached out to Taylor and Jevon with an idea: a backpack drive to help children receiving treatment at Lurie Children’s Hospital. The Carters, driven by their passion for giving back through their Treadmill Mentality Foundation, eagerly agreed. The goal was simple yet impactful—to alleviate the burden on these young patients and their families by ensuring they wouldn’t need to worry about shopping for school supplies.

After the supplies and backpacks – donated by Treadmill Mentality – arrived at the Downtown Clubhouse, a team from Smithbucklin volunteered their time to make this vision a reality. They filled 60 backpacks to the brim with everything a child might need for the first day of school. To add an extra touch of warmth, the Chicago Bulls generously donated Just Don beanies, ensuring each child had a little something extra to make their day special.

On August 15, the excitement was palpable as Taylor and Jevon Carter joined the GCC staff to personally deliver the backpacks to Lurie Children’s Hospital. It was a day filled with hope and smiles as they met some of the incredible kids receiving treatment on the 18th floor. A particularly unforgettable moment was witnessing one of the patients ring the Bell of Bravery—a powerful symbol marking the end of her cancer treatment. The room erupted in celebration, reminding us all of the strength and resilience these young patients possess.

This event highlighted a profound truth: it takes a community of caring and compassionate individuals to ensure that no one faces a cancer diagnosis alone. The partnership between Treadmill Mentality, Lurie Children’s Hospital, Smithbucklin, and GCC is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together for a common cause.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this effort. Your support allows us to continue our mission of standing by those impacted by cancer, providing comfort, resources, and a sense of community during challenging times.
